Industrial Engineer(IIE USA) June 2008

Letter by Prof KVSS Narayana Rao (IE 7) was published in Industrial Engineer.

Coverage examination

I read the magazine more regularly after rejoining the faculty of the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (India).

In my efforts to understand the focus of industrial engineering from its history, I came to the conclusion that the focus of IE is on efficiency or productivity. This efficiency focus can be categorized into human efficiency and system efficiency.

The focus of [Frederick] Taylor and [Frank and Lillian] Gilbreth was more on human efficiency. The focus of Harrington Emerson was on system efficiency. Industrial engineering is an amalgam of the thoughts of these pioneers and has progressed well.

Industrial engineers have to understand the technical and business processes that are given to them improve efficiency. In a magazine of industrial engineers, there should be material on IE departments, their organization, and achievements. Managing IE departments and implementation of IE projects are vital areas that should be covered. Then descriptions of career progress of industrial engineers from IE departments to CEOs are required to provide role models to young industrial engineers.
